About Family Therapy & Counseling

Family therapy, also called couples therapy, family therapy, family systems and family council is a branch of psychotherapy that works with families and couples in intimate relationships to foster change and development. You tend to see change in terms of systems of interaction between family members. It emphasizes family relationships as an important factor in psychological health.

The various schools of family therapy have in common is the belief that regardless of the source of the problem, regardless of whether customers see as an “individual” or “family” issue, involving families in solutions is often beneficial. This family involvement is often accomplished by their direct participation in the therapy session. The skills of the family therapist thus include the ability to influence conversations in a way that catalyzes the strength, wisdom, and support of the entire system.

In the early years of the field, many clinicians defined the family in a traditional close and usually including parents and children. As the field has evolved, the concept of family is more commonly defined in terms very favorable long-term roles and relationships between people who may or may not be related by blood or marriage.

Family therapy has been used effectively in the full spectrum of human dilemmas, and there is no category of relationship or psychological problem that has not been treated with this approach.  The framework developed by family therapists, particularly family systems theorists, were used on a wide range of human behavior, including organizational dynamics and the study of greatness.
